Human Trafficking: Protecting Our Children Online

How safe are the kids and youth in our community ... really? Especially online.
We might assume we would recognize danger if it were happening nearby, but the reality is that exploitation and human trafficking often begin quietly: through social media, gaming platforms, online friendships, and manipulation that many young people are simply not prepared to navigate alone.
An important community event is taking place on two nights - June 4 and 8 (the content will be the same at both) on protecting children online and raising awareness about human trafficking in our region. The event is being hosted by Rotary in partnership with OneChild, and will feature a local high school student speaking about the realities young people face online today.
Our area’s proximity to the 401 corridor means that human trafficking is not a distant issue “somewhere else.” It is happening across Ontario, in cities and towns like ours, often targeting vulnerable youth through digital spaces many families use every day.
As a church, we care deeply about justice, dignity, and the protection of the vulnerable. We have supported organizations such as IJM Canada and SEEDS who are actively engaged in this fight. This event is an opportunity for us to listen, learn, and become more aware of how we can protect and advocate for children and youth in our own community.
This one hour talk is a great opportunity for everyone, but especially parents, grandparents, caregivers, teachers, and anyone working with young people. Awareness and informed conversation are some of the most important tools we have.
